Deferred members

The pension benefits of deferred members are not affected by the proposed changes to USS, so if you are a deferred member, you cannot log in or respond to the consultation.

You are a deferred member if you are no longer working in USS-eligible employment but have completed a period of pensionable service, which qualifies you for USS benefits on retirement.

If you are a deferred member and you are currently working in a role that entitles you to join USS, even if you have opted out, you will be considered a prospective member, and you can register here.

Pensioner members

If you are a retired USS member, pension benefits already built up are not affected by the proposed scheme changes. As a retired member, you cannot log in or respond to the consultation unless you have taken flexible retirement, or have returned to work, and you are currently employed in a role that entitles you to USS membership.

If you have flexibly retired or are retired and still contributing to USS, you can log in with your member number.

If you have retired (including flexibly retired) and are working in a role that makes you eligible to re-join USS, you can register as a prospective member.

The proposed changes relate to benefits that will be earned in the future. Any pension benefits you have already built up in USS to the date of change are secure and protected by law.
